A first date is so often about making a good impression more than anything and one of the best ways to do that is by taking them to a lovely venue where they’ll feel you’ve gone to lots of effort in planning a special evening. Here are a few places that should certainly deliver on that front.
With its stylish, relaxed yet fun feel, Big Chill House is an ideal choice if you want a venue that gives you plenty to see and do (there’s ice to be broken after all) yet not somewhere that’s going to feel too formal and flashy, and risk scaring them off. This large Victorian Pub and event space boasts delicious food and drink, great music, a dancefloor, lots of offers to help snag a bargain, free Wi-Fi, and an all-year round terrace with funky décor should you prefer to be out in the fresh air.
Going to see a movie is a classic choice of activity for a first date, and screening venues don’t come much better than Everyman Cinema in Canary Wharf. The three screens all come with the venue’s now trademark sofa seating, for a much more comfortable (and snuggle-inviting) arrangement. Uniquely designed with bold colours and patterns, the auditoria also benefit from the highest standard of picture quality and the latest in digital projection technology.
Making sure there’s plenty to do to keep you both busy is often a good idea on a first date, given how natural it is to feel nervous. The Lodge at All Star Lanes in Bayswater is certainly not lacking in that department, with private bowling lanes, a cocktail bar with its own dedicated mixologist, karaoke for the brave amongst you and a deliciously tempting New York inspired menu to make the most of. Leather booths and playful touches transform the space into an American lodge in the deep south, staying true to the venue’s theme.
ABO Lounge, or All Bar One, is found in the iconic O2 and spreads across a total of three floors, ideal if you want to feel you are within the bustle of a crowd – you know, safety in numbers and all that. This vast venue has a simplicity to its décor that keeps things feeling cool and relaxed; once again avoiding the fear of pitching it too formal. In terms of getting there – because arriving late is never a good idea on a first date – North Greenwich station is just a few minutes away.
If, however, the idea of a touch of class appeals, consider Humble Grape, a lovely venue that boasts dramatic features such as ornate arches and brick columns, with the original design thought to be the work of nonother that Sir Christopher Wren. With a wonderful selection of wines sourced from sustainable, independent vineyards, you certainly won’t be short of a good tipple or two to help settle your nerves. Blackfriars and City Thameslink are the nearest transport options.
